The Telegraph reports that those close to the former Borussia Dortmund and Liverpool manager believe a return to coaching remains on the cards, with international football the preferred route rather than a return to club management. Germany and the United States are identified as the frontrunners for his signature.
An approach from the Football Association was already explored and rejected.
The target, according to the report, would be arriving in the role in time to prepare a squad for the 2030 World Cup. A return to club football is considered much less likely by his entourage, though it has not been formally ruled out.
The report singles out Real Madrid as a destination seen as particularly unlikely. Timing and the specific nature of any offer are said to be the decisive factors.
Klopp, 58, left Liverpool at the end of the 2023-24 season after winning the Premier League for the first time in the club's history, the Champions League, and a string of domestic cups during nine years at Anfield. He subsequently became Red Bull's head of global soccer, overseeing operations at RB Leipzig, RB Salzburg and New York Red Bulls, a role he holds under contract until December 2029.
He is currently at the 2026 World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico as a pundit for German broadcaster MagentaTV. His role at the tournament has already generated headlines of its own. During Magenta's coverage of Germany's group stage win over Curacao, Klopp joked live on air that it was "lucky" Julian Nagelsmann was still picking the team.
The remark drew an immediate reaction, with Nagelsmann telling reporters he did not expect an apology and did not follow every comment made about his squad. Klopp reached out to Nagelsmann directly and apologised, saying the comment had "absolutely no relevance" and had simply slipped out. He added: "I'll be 59 on Tuesday and I'm still an idiot."
The DFB has approached Klopp on multiple occasions about the Germany role according to Bild, which reported in March that a post-2026 World Cup move to the national team is considered increasingly likely within Red Bull circles.
