Jürgen Klopp has revealed he attempted to sign Konrad Laimer for Liverpool in 2022, disclosing during World Cup punditry that he wanted the Austrian as a defensive midfielder — the role he has never held at Bayern Munich.

Speaking on Magenta TV during Austria's Group C defeat to Argentina, in which Lionel Messi scored twice, Klopp said: "What I can say about Konrad Laimer is that, in my team, he would play as a number six.

"I wanted to bring him to Liverpool to play that role. But then he went to Bayern."

The timing aligns with Liverpool's midfield crisis in the summer of 2022, when Fabinho's form was declining and Jordan Henderson, Thiago Alcântara, Naby Keïta and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain were all carrying injuries.

Liverpool ended up signing Arthur Melo on an emergency loan, and the following summer addressed the midfield properly with the £149.5m arrivals of Dominik Szoboszlai, Ryan Gravenberch, Alexis Mac Allister and Wataru Endo.

Laimer instead joined Bayern Munich from RB Leipzig on a free transfer in 2023, signing a four-year deal through to summer 2027. At Bayern he has operated primarily as a utility right-back or left-back, making 47 appearances last season and contributing three goals and 13 assists. He has previously admitted he has "always been a Liverpool fan."

The revelation comes as Laimer's own future at Bayern takes a positive turn. Despite months of stalled contract talks — his initial demands were understood to exceed €15m annually — a broad agreement on an extension is now in place, with a salary of around €12m a year expected. An announcement is anticipated shortly.

Laimer has scored seven goals in 59 appearances for the Austrian national side.
