Liverpool face growing questions over Chiesa and Endo futures as opportunities disappear

Federico Chiesa and Wataru Endo are struggling to find a route into Andoni Iraola's Liverpool plans, with the senior pair increasingly facing uncertain futures at Anfield.

The two experienced internationals have managed just two minutes of first-team football between them this season, with Chiesa making a late appearance in the 3-0 defeat against Manchester City before being left unused in subsequent fixtures.

Endo, meanwhile, has yet to feature, despite repeatedly being named among the substitutes. Both players were also overlooked for Liverpool's recent Carabao Cup victories over Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea, with Iraola increasingly turning towards the club's younger options.

Their omission from Liverpool's 25-man Champions League squad further underlined their position in the pecking order. Particularly telling was the decision to include injured striker Hugo Ekitike while leaving the senior pair out.

Iraola had previously suggested Endo would receive opportunities, acknowledging the Japanese international's professionalism while explaining the competition for midfield places.

“Wata lost quite a lot of the pre-season. He is still not at his best but he is training very well.

“The problem is in front of him in his position I have a lot of players. He is competing against a lot of players.

“We are giving minutes to Trey, Ryan, Alexis and Dom, players that I am selecting right now. But Wata is definitely a player that I like and for sure he will have his moments.”

Those moments have yet to materialise, with Trey Nyoni and Lewis Koumas among the academy graduates benefiting from the opportunities available under the new manager.

There is little reason for Iraola to change his approach while the younger players continue to impress, particularly given Liverpool's long-term commitment to developing and promoting academy talent.

Endo's situation appears the more straightforward. The 33-year-old is approaching the final year of his contract, which expires in 2027, making a January departure or a summer exit on a free transfer increasingly plausible.

Chiesa has a more complicated contractual position, with the Italian under contract until 2028. However, his limited involvement and continuing links with a return to Serie A raise questions about whether Liverpool would consider an offer in January.

Former Italy international Angelo Di Livio has already suggested Roma would provide an ideal opportunity for the forward to revive his career under Gian Piero Gasperini.

“He made a mistake in joining Liverpool,” Di Livio told Retesport.

“A player who knows how to play football always knows how to do it.

“He needs to recover, but I'd take him since he can play on both flanks. With Gasperini, Chiesa would return to the national team.”

Liverpool have yet to see the best of the 29-year-old, who has recorded five goals and four assists in 51 appearances since arriving from Juventus in 2024. His opportunities have been particularly limited in the Premier League, where he has made only two starts.

A January departure would potentially suit all parties if a suitable offer arrives, while Endo also appears increasingly likely to move on.

For Liverpool, the situation reflects Iraola's willingness to prioritise players he believes can contribute to the club's future. For Chiesa and Endo, however, the immediate challenge is finding a way back into a first-team picture that is becoming increasingly difficult to penetrate.
