Andoni Iraola has praised Alexis Mac Allister’s commitment to Liverpool, with the midfielder’s desire to stay central to discussions over his contract future.

Mac Allister, 27, joined Liverpool from Brighton in 2023 after the club activated his release clause. His current agreement runs until 2028, but the absence of a new offer has prompted uncertainty over his long-term future.

The Argentina international spoke publicly about his disappointment in September after revealing Liverpool had not offered him an extension. He also confirmed that he had the opportunity to leave during the summer but chose to stay, saying he wanted to help the club achieve something special.

Iraola, who was present at the press conference in which Mac Allister discussed his situation, said the most important point was the player’s stated intention to remain at Liverpool and continue working hard.

“You mention the press conference he had and I was there also, after him. The most important thing from that is that he wants to stay here. That is very important. He wants to work hard, he wants to be at his best so he can continue here helping us.

“A player of that level who has achieved what he has achieved, who can be as clear as that with his intentions, is very good for us because I appreciate him a lot. He’s a top player.”

Mac Allister’s position has strengthened through his recent performances. After a difficult final season under Arne Slot, he has become central to Iraola’s midfield.

His contribution has also changed in emphasis. Opta figures show he is making more tackles, winning more duels and recovering possession more frequently than last season, while his attacking output has fallen. He is averaging 2.3 tackles per Premier League appearance, compared with 1.8 last term, and winning 4.8 duels per game rather than 3.8.

Iraola believes the midfielder’s understanding of the wider game is one of his most valuable qualities, allowing him to influence teammates beyond the immediate responsibilities of his own position.

“The thing about Mac Allister is that he understands the game overall, not just the demands of his position. It is just what is happening overall in the game.

“Sometimes he is the first one to correct his teammates, not just the one who is next to him. He understands what is happening around him which is a very important quality to have.”

Mac Allister has scored four goals and provided one assist in 13 appearances in all competitions this season. His winner against Atlético Madrid in September came shortly after he had spoken about his contract disappointment, and his improved form has helped Liverpool build momentum ahead of their meeting with Arsenal.

With two years remaining on his contract, the situation is unresolved, but his recent performances have strengthened his position.
