He arrives as a direct replacement for Pascal Struijk, who joined Brighton for £20m in June, and becomes Leeds' second signing of the summer following Harry Wilson's free transfer from Fulham as the club continues to rebuild its squad following promotion back to the Premier League.
Muharemovic made an immediate impression on his new supporters with a combative message on arrival, leaving little doubt about the mentality he intends to bring to Elland Road.
"I will give everything for this club. I will give everything, every game," he said. "I just want to win.
"I hate to lose and I will fight for every ball, even if it is my head or my feet, I am going."
The centre-back made three appearances for Bosnia-Herzegovina at this summer's World Cup, including in their round of 32 defeat by co-hosts the United States. That match brought Muharemovic unwanted global attention after he was fouled by USA forward Folarin Balogun, who was sent off for the challenge.
Balogun's one-match suspension was subsequently lifted by FIFA's disciplinary committee ahead of the USA's next fixture, following a call from US President Donald Trump to FIFA president Gianni Infantino asking for the decision to be reviewed — a highly unusual intervention that drew strong criticism from other federations and European football bodies, some of whom described it as an unprecedented departure from FIFA's normal disciplinary processes.
Muharemovic's route to Elland Road has taken in several countries and leagues. Born in the Slovenian capital Ljubljana, he began his career in Austrian football, making his senior debut with Wolfsberger in 2021 before moves through Serie A brought him first to lower-profile Italian clubs and then to Sassuolo, where his performances established him as one of the division's most highly-rated young centre-backs and eventually attracted Premier League interest.
His arrival gives head coach Daniel Farke a physically imposing and combative option at the heart of defence as Leeds look to build on their return to the top flight following promotion, with the club continuing to work on further additions before the transfer window closes and the new Premier League campaign gets underway.
