Régis Le Bris has praised Omar Alderete after the defender impressed in Sunderland’s Carabao Cup tie with Brentford and suited the team’s high-pressing style.

The Paraguay international started at centre-back after Le Bris made 11 changes to the side that had ended Sunderland’s run of Premier League defeats against Leeds United. Alderete was substituted on the hour, having faced a physical contest against Brentford forward Igor Thiago.

Alderete made seven defensive contributions and won six duels during his time on the pitch. His performance earned particular approval from Le Bris, who believes the defender’s strength and ability to deal with one-on-one situations are essential to the way Sunderland want to play.

The manager explained that a high press inevitably leaves space for opponents to play forward, placing significant responsibility on the centre-backs when teams go long.

“[I'm] happy. We spoke about the style of play. We try to press high, it’s more or less the trend of the Premier League. You press up, and it means your opponent will go long. If your centre-backs are not strong, consistent and able to manage 1v1s, it’s over.”

Le Bris acknowledged that players cannot maintain their highest level in every match, but he was especially pleased with the way Alderete handled the challenge against Brentford. The manager’s response suggested that the performance was an example of the qualities he wants from his defenders.

“It’s a question of momentum. We are humans. You can’t be at your top consistently. Omar yesterday, wow. Thank you Omar. I like this version.”

Alderete’s display came in a 3-2 Sunderland victory at the Stadium of Light on October 28, a result that sent the club through to the quarter-finals. Chemsdine Talbi, Timur Tutierov and Malick Fofana scored for the hosts, while Brentford replied through Wilson and Igor Thiago.

The defender’s ability to compete physically and manage situations in space was central to Le Bris’s assessment. With Sunderland seeking to press opponents high, the manager wants centre-backs who can defend aggressively when the opposition bypasses the first line of pressure.

Alderete’s performance against Brentford gave Le Bris encouragement that the defender can provide those qualities, with the coach particularly pleased by this version of the Paraguay international.
