Juventus are pushing to tie down France international centre-back Pierre Kalulu to an improved long-term contract before Manchester United can formalise their interest, with the two sides unable to agree terms and a salary gap still remaining.

Corriere dello Sport reported that Manchester United scouts have attended multiple Juventus matches this season specifically to monitor the 25-year-old, who started 49 of the club's 50 matches and established himself as one of the most reliable defenders in Serie A.

Tottenham Hotspur are also monitoring him, though interest from that quarter is described as less advanced.

Kalulu is currently contracted until June 2029 on a salary of around €2.5m per season β€” a figure Juventus are seeking to increase to approximately €3.5m while extending the deal to 2030 with an option for a further year. Kalulu's camp are understood to be holding out for closer to €4m plus bonuses. Negotiations are ongoing but the gap has not yet been bridged.

The defender's appeal to United lies in his versatility. He can operate as a right-sided centre-back in a back three, as a right-back in a back four, or as a wing-back β€” positions that align with United's need for a defender capable of covering multiple roles amid persistent injury concerns surrounding Lisandro MartΓnez, Matthijs de Ligt and Leny Yoro.

Kalulu joined Juventus on an initial loan from AC Milan in 2024 for €3m before the club activated a €16m purchase option β€” a deal widely regarded as one of the shrewdest pieces of business Juventus have conducted in recent years.

His current balance sheet value of €12m means any sale above €40m would represent a significant profit, and while Juventus are firmly opposed to selling, the need to generate transfer income following their failure to qualify for next season's Champions League creates a degree of financial pressure.

The club regard Andrea Cambiaso, Fede Gatti, Teun Koopmeiners and Michele Di Gregorio as more realistic candidates for sale. Losing Kalulu β€” the cornerstone of their defence β€” would be a far more painful concession.
