Mauro Icardi could be heading back to Italian football, with Juventus reportedly emerging as the leading contender to sign the former Inter captain when the transfer window reopens in January.

The 33-year-old is without a club after leaving Galatasaray in June, and a return to Serie A is understood to be his preferred option.

According to Argentine outlet TyC Sports, Juventus currently represents the most accessible route back into the Italian top flight, with the striker prepared to accept a significant reduction in salary.

Icardi’s first choice had reportedly been a return to Inter, where he spent six seasons and became captain. He is said to have made himself available to the club on several occasions, even offering to take a reduced role in the attacking pecking order under Cristian Chivu.

The proposal was understood to include a willingness to accept a place as low as fifth choice among the forwards. However, Inter president Giuseppe Marotta has made clear that the club does not intend to bring Icardi back to San Siro.

Speaking before Inter Milan’s Champions League meeting with Feyenoord, Marotta acknowledged the Argentine’s contribution to the club but ruled out a reunion, adding that Inter did not plan to sign another striker.

That response has strengthened the possibility of a move to Turin, where Luciano Spalletti is now in charge. The Juventus coach knows Icardi well, having worked with him during their time together at Inter, when the striker was among the most productive centre-forwards in Serie A.

Spalletti’s presence is viewed as an important factor in the developing story. Juventus are reportedly looking for greater reliability and experience in attack, with questions raised about the consistency of their current options, including Randal Kolo Muani and Nick Woltemade.

The possibility of Icardi joining Juventus is not entirely new. He was reportedly willing to accept a move to Turin last January while still under contract at Galatasaray, but that transfer failed to materialise. He was also close to joining Lazio before the deal collapsed.

Icardi’s departure from Galatasaray followed five seasons in Turkey, during which he scored 77 goals in 134 appearances and helped the club win four league titles. He now faces another decision over the next stage of his career, with Juventus potentially offering him the opportunity to return to a league where he previously established himself as a prolific goalscorer.

No agreement has been confirmed, and the Juventus link remains a reported transfer possibility rather than a completed move.
