Hamburger SV have opened formal talks with Arsenal over a permanent transfer for Fábio Vieira, with the Bundesliga club determined to build their squad around the Portugal attacker after a productive loan season.
Sky Germany journalist Florian Plettenberg reported that Hamburg are doing everything in their power to retain Vieira and have made their intentions clear in direct conversations with the player. Vieira, 25, is open to staying in Germany.
The obstacle is financial. Hamburg's loan agreement with Arsenal included a purchase option valued at €20 million — a figure widely considered beyond the north German club's reach. Their record transfer fee stands at €14 million, and the club's sporting director Claus Costa and board member Eric Huwer have been working to renegotiate the clause to a more accessible figure, understood to be in the region of €10 million to €12 million.
Previous reports suggest Vieira has already agreed personal terms with Hamburg in anticipation of a permanent deal, giving both parties an incentive to find a number that works.
Vieira joined Arsenal from Porto in the summer of 2022 for around £30 million but struggled to force his way into Mikel Arteta's starting plans at the Emirates Stadium, making only three Premier League starts in his first season. A loan back to Porto last year provided some continuity, before Hamburg offered him the chance to play regularly at the top level of German football for the first time.
He delivered. Across 29 Bundesliga appearances this season Vieira scored seven goals and contributed five assists, playing a central role in helping Hamburg avoid relegation in their first season back in the top flight after a 37-year absence.
"I have to be open to everything," Vieira said when asked about his future earlier this month. "Let's see what happens."
Arsenal's position is straightforward: they have no plans to reintegrate Vieira into their squad and would prefer a clean permanent sale rather than allowing him to enter the final year of his contract — which expires in 2027 — without resolution.
Whether Hamburg can meet Arsenal's financial demands will determine where Vieira plays next season.
