They lost their opener 2-0 to Australia before falling 1-0 to Paraguay in their second match, despite playing the entire second half with a numerical advantage following Miguel Almiron's red card.
Real Madrid's Arda Guler was visibly devastated after the final whistle, captured by television cameras looking to the sky and asking why.
Speaking afterwards, Guler reflected on the scale of the disappointment.
"I will do everything in my power to make sure this tournament is forgotten throughout my career with the national team. We play for very important clubs and we should have shown that on the pitch. We didn't manage it, we weren't capable. We conceded a goal very early. There isn't much more to say," Guler said.
He went further in expressing his regret to Turkish supporters.
"We are very sad and we feel ashamed. We apologise to all our people. In future tournaments we will give our best. We play for great clubs, and we should have shown that," he said.
Goalkeeper Ugurcan Cakir echoed his team-mate's sentiment.
"I apologise to my country. We wanted to make them proud, but we haven't managed it. There were a lot of expectations and we haven't lived up to them. I also apologise to those who travelled here. There's nothing to say about the match. My team-mates gave everything, we fought with all our strength," Cakir said.
Head coach Vincenzo Montella expressed his own sadness while defending his players.
"The team showed its soul and fought to the very last breath," Montella said. "We have to accept results, which sometimes don't make sense. Football is the king of sports for a reason, and sometimes the best team doesn't always win, that's the nature of the sport."
Montella admitted he had expected Turkey to progress further in the tournament.
"The easiest thing in the world would be to point to one specific player, but that's not who I am. I called up these players because they are the best available to me. I did expect that we could get through the group stage, but in matches like these, anything can happen," he said.
