Pep Guardiola will formally inform Manchester City chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak of his decision to leave the club before Sunday's final Premier League match of the season against Aston Villa, bringing to an end a ten-year tenure that produced 20 trophies.

Manchester City confirmed their exit from the title race on Tuesday when a 1-1 draw at Bournemouth handed Arsenal the championship with one round remaining. Junior Kroupi's 39th-minute strike put City behind and, while Erling Haaland equalised in stoppage time, the draw was not enough. Arsenal's lead of four points is now insurmountable.

Guardiola addressed the media at Bournemouth, declining to make a formal announcement but making clear the conversation with his chairman was imminent.

"The first person I have to talk to is my chairman. He deserves to be first, I deserve to talk to him first about what we are going to do. Let me talk to my chairman. I know the fans love me, I love them more. I adore that place."

He congratulated Mikel Arteta and Arsenal directly.

"Congratulations Arsenal, Mikel, staff, backroom staff, fans for this Premier League title."

Guardiola reflected on a season disrupted by injuries and a congested fixture schedule.

"Since January things were really good. We had many injuries and many things we could not control. We played in many moments with difficulties. We never gave up. I would love to arrive until the last moment against Aston Villa with a chance but we didn't win today because we missed that pace, that situation that is required to play against teams like Bournemouth."

Former Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca, who served as Guardiola's assistant during the 2022-23 treble-winning campaign, is in position to succeed him, with a three-year deal understood to be in place contingent on Guardiola's formal departure being processed. A compensation package with Chelsea, whose contract with Maresca was terminated in January, is the remaining formality to be resolved.

City will still be honoured at a parade through Manchester following Sunday's match, celebrating the Carabao Cup and FA Cup won this season.
