Florentino Luís gave Ipswich the lead before half-time, but Hull City responded after the interval through Tim Iroegbunam and Oli McBurnie. Julio Enciso equalised in the 74th minute to ensure the visitors left with a share of the points.
Jakirović was particularly disappointed with Hull's first-half display but praised the tactical changes that helped his team turn the game around.
“Of course there are two very different feelings. My first words in the changing room at half time were that we can't play so bad again in the second half. We changed our system, which I think was crucial, and we showed the right fight and spirit.
“We sat too deep in the first half and there was too much space in the pockets for Ipswich to play. After going behind we tried to put John Egan in to help the midfield because we could see that Oli was playing up against three players all of the time. They locked out our wing-backs and they overloaded us.
“The decision to change at half time was good but no reflection on John Egan's performance, it was just a tactical substitution. We were a lot more aggressive in the second half and much better in possession. We pressed them and were able to create more attacking opportunities. Some of our decisions on the ball could have been better but the players know this and know how they can be better in those situations.”
The Tigers' improvement brought two goals, with Iroegbunam finishing an excellent attacking move before McBurnie scored directly from a free-kick.
Jakirović was pleased to see the work undertaken on the training ground translate into Iroegbunam's first goal for the club.
“It was a great action for us. It was a great decision from Lewie to pass inwards with his left foot and Oli did well to drop back into that number ten position and it's a great pass to free Tim. It's not easy for him from there because he has 50 metres to go but he stayed really calm and came up with an excellent finish.
“It's something that we work on in training but, in matches, sometimes the opposition stop you. Sometimes it works and results in a goal like today, so I am very happy with this.”
McBurnie's free-kick was his second goal in as many matches, and the Hull manager was confident there was more to come.
“I had no concerns about Oli because I know what he does and know what he means to this team. A lot of the work he does is not easy. A penalty last week, a free-kick this week. Hopefully next it is a goal from open play for him.”
However, Enciso's late equaliser left Jakirović frustrated by his team's inability to protect their advantage.
“We turned the game around to lead 2-1, but I feel that maybe we could have controlled the last 20 minutes a bit better. When you are behind, you take many more risks to try and come back, but when ahead we needed to be a bit more organised. They scored a great equaliser but he had three players around him and we could have at least maybe committed the foul to stop the shot.
“If you cannot win the game then don't lose it so in that respect I can be happy.”
O'Neil, meanwhile, felt Ipswich Town had demonstrated their quality throughout the contest.
“I'm really proud of what the players produced today, and they gave everything.
“It was another really good display, I think. I take a lot of promise from the game, because it's not easy to go away from home and be that good against the opposition.
“The nature of the goals we conceded leaves me a little bit frustrated, but the team's performance and how dominant we were in both halves really pleased me.
“I've watched a lot of Hull's games, and we probably created the most of anybody, really. So lots of positives. I wish it was three, but a point on the road is a point on the road in the Premier League. They're hard to get – very hard to get.
“It keeps us moving and we get ourselves ready for a big game back at Portman Road against Bournemouth next weekend.”
