Bart Verbruggen has played down talk of Brighton entering the Premier League title race after their impressive 1-0 victory away to Manchester City.

Yasin Ayari scored the only goal at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday, giving Brighton a significant victory against the league leaders and strengthening their position among the leading sides.

The result moved Fabian Hürzeler’s team to third place, just two points behind Manchester City and Arsenal, although the Gunners have a game in hand.

Despite the growing excitement around Brighton’s season, goalkeeper Verbruggen was reluctant to entertain suggestions that his team could challenge for the championship.

“No, not really. We take it one game at a time. We have plenty of matches ahead of us, so we focus on what is coming and look towards the next game. Then we will see where that leaves us at the end of the season,” he said.

The Netherlands international was, however, encouraged by the team's performances and believes there is still room for improvement.

“We are happy with the way we are playing – not just the results, but also our football. We have to keep developing our style of play and become even more clinical. We can achieve great things,” he added.

Brighton had to withstand considerable pressure from Manchester City after taking the lead in the 11th minute. Ayari’s goal gave the visitors an advantage they defended until the final whistle, with Verbruggen playing an important role in keeping the hosts at bay.

The victory was particularly significant given City's position at the top of the table and their recent form. It was their second consecutive Premier League defeat, while Brighton continued to build momentum.

Verbruggen’s comments reflect a cautious approach from a team that has made an impressive start to the campaign but is not yet prepared to make grand predictions.

Brighton will instead look to maintain their consistency and continue improving as the season progresses. With the leading sides still within reach, their position in the table gives them plenty of reason for ambition, even if Verbruggen is unwilling to look too far ahead.
