Lutsharel Geertruida has swapped one Bundesliga exile for a return to Eredivisie combat, joining reigning champions PSV Eindhoven on loan from RB Leipzig in a move that pits him directly against his boyhood club.

PSV confirmed on their official website that the 26-year-old Netherlands international has arrived until next summer, with an option to buy included in the agreement โ€” reports on the exact figure have varied, with some outlets citing around โ‚ฌ13-15million and others closer to ยฃ11million.

The versatile defender spent last season on loan in the Premier League with Sunderland, making 28 appearances, 17 of them starts, as the Black Cats secured a seventh-place finish and Europa League qualification. Sunderland opted against triggering an option to buy at the end of that loan.

Geertruida joined RB Leipzig from Feyenoord in the summer of 2024, but has struggled for regular game time in the Bundesliga since.

A return to the Eredivisie with PSV, coached by Peter Bosz, now offers him a fresh route back into Ronald Koeman's Netherlands plans โ€” an especially sharp twist given Geertruida spent years as a Feyenoord academy graduate and first-team regular before his move to Germany.

"Sometimes there comes a moment in a career when you're ready for a new challenge and start thinking about the right next step," Geertruida told the PSV website. "In my case, this time it wasn't an easy search.

"I'm 26 years old, I want to play at the highest level, compete for titles, keep developing and stay in the fight for a place in the Dutch national team."

He continued: "This club embodies all the aspects that are important to me right now. And all of this within a team where I have a realistic chance of playing time and which plays in a style that suits me. That narrows it down to a handful of selected clubs โ€” and they also have to be interested in working with me. After several fantastic conversations with Peter Bosz and the PSV management, I became convinced that this club embodies all the aspects that are important to me right now."

The move reunites Geertruida with a division he left for Germany two years ago, and hands PSV a defender capable of playing across the back line and in midfield as they push to defend their Eredivisie title while also competing in Europe this season.
