The AS Roma head coach's comments, made after Sunday's defeat to Brighton, point towards the left-sided attacking midfield role he has been requesting for over a year, ideally filled by a right-footed player capable of cutting inside.
Mora, a 2007-born Portugal youth international already faced by Roma in the Europa League this year, has emerged as the leading candidate, with Porto having rebuffed Galatasaray's slower-moving approach and Roma pushing to get an agreement over the line.
Porto head coach Francesco Farioli said on Saturday that Mora was not among the players who had expressed a desire to leave the club, with the teenager making only a late substitute appearance in Porto's win over Alverca.
Roma, however, remain confident of striking a deal, and Gasperini is understood to be keen to start working with his new attacking midfielder as soon as possible. Any arrival for Mora would not necessarily close Roma's business in that area, with D'Amico also monitoring Real Madrid's Endrick - expected to be loaned out this summer and also wanted by Aston Villa - as well as Lyon's Malik Fofana, PSG's Ibrahim Mbaye and Chelsea's Jamie Gittens.
Brazilian full-back Wesley, speaking separately to La Gazzetta dello Sport, said Roma's pre-season struggles - which have included defeats to both Cardiff and Brighton - were better addressed now than later in the campaign.
"If something is going to go wrong or we're going to have bad results like the ones we lost against Cardiff or Brighton, it's better it happens now and not further down the line," he said. "That said, we need to understand what we're getting wrong and how to correct it."
Wesley is set to move permanently to left-back following the imminent arrival of Nahuel Molina, a positional switch he made out of necessity last season and appears happy to embrace on a lasting basis.
"Gasp likes how I perform in that position. I try to give my best, to improve, I watch videos to understand how I can do more and help Roma in that role," he said. "And I'm happy about Molina's arrival, we're talking about a great player who will definitely be able to give us important help."
Asked about Roma's reported interest in signing Endrick, Wesley did not hide his enthusiasm at the prospect of playing alongside his compatriot.
"I'd love it if he came, but he knows what's best for his future," he said. "Other Brazilians? There are many around the world who could be useful to us, but it's the sporting director who decides."
