Speaking to Sky and RTL, the SC Freiburg right-back was cautious about his chances when Germany's squad is announced on Thursday, but confirmed the conversation with the national team boss, Jürgen Klopp, had already taken place.
"Whether it's enough on Thursday remains to be seen," Treu said. "I can say that I had the conversation with the head coach. We got to know each other a bit, so I can only say positive things about it."
Treu, 25, has started the season strongly with Freiburg, establishing himself at right-back after a productive spell that first drew wider attention to his game. His performance level has continued to climb since returning to the club last year, and he has become a regular fixture in a Freiburg side building on last season's run to the Europa League final.
"It was a cool conversation, to get an impression of what his idea and his plan are," Treu said, describing his first contact with the head coach. "Simply positive."
Klopp has spoken previously about wanting to widen his search beyond established faces, with defensive positions - particularly at right-back - seen as an area of the squad open to fresh contenders.
A call-up for Treu would mark a rapid change in fortune for a player who returned to Freiburg from FC St Pauli only last summer, having previously come through the Bundesliga club's own academy before leaving in 2023.
Treu has never previously featured for Germany at senior level, though he did represent the country's Under-19 side earlier in his career. His current form has made him a notable candidate for the right-back berth, a position that has proven difficult for successive Germany coaches to settle since Joshua Kimmich's shift into a more central midfield role.
SC Freiburg's own European exploits last season, which culminated in a run to the Europa League final, played a significant part in raising Treu's profile beyond the Bundesliga.
