Poyet, speaking to Football Presse, said: “I think this appointment is one of the best they could have made.
“Obviously the situation is particular — if it was the summer, 100 per cent it’s perfect. Now it depends on how quickly you can change things.”
De Zerbi arrives with a growing reputation following spells at Brighton & Hove Albion FC and Olympique de Marseille, and Poyet believes Tottenham’s determination to secure him sends a strong message.
“I thought it was a great signing, a very good decision,” he said.
“The coach should be happy because the club pushed hard for him — really hard.
“That sends a message to the fans as well: this is our number one, and he’s coming no matter what. For me, that’s great for everybody.”
However, Poyet warned that De Zerbi’s success will ultimately depend on how quickly he can stabilise a difficult situation.
“I’ve been at Marseille — the pressure there is even worse than at Tottenham,” he said.
“But this is different. Tottenham right now is dangerous.
“Changing the coach doesn’t automatically change the situation. It’s still dangerous.”
Spurs have already attempted to spark a turnaround earlier in the season, and Poyet believes patience will be required before judging the latest decision.
“When a club changes coach during the season, it’s to see a reaction,” he said.
“They tried before and it didn’t work. Now they’ve done it again, and they are hoping this time it will work.
“But we need to wait for the first few games.”
Poyet also addressed the growing tension between players and supporters, suggesting modern football culture — particularly social media — is amplifying negativity.
“When I came to England, I knew that if I gave 100 per cent every week, the result would come,” he said.
“Now it feels like it’s the other way around — only the result matters, and if you lose, you’re rubbish.
“On social media, after a game, almost everything is negative. That has a big impact.”
Despite criticism, Poyet defended the players’ effort levels — while acknowledging confusion within the squad.
“I don’t pay attention to social media, I look at the players,” he said.
“Are they giving the maximum? Yes, for me, yes.
“But are they playing at their maximum level? No — because they are confused. And in this situation, that’s normal.”
