Bernal has been with the club since joining the academy at Under-8 level. His progress through the youth ranks has continued over the past year, and he became a full-time scholar during the 2025-26 season.
The goalkeeper established himself with Chelsea’s Under-18s and helped the side win the Under-18 Premier League title at Stamford Bridge. He has since become a regular for Cobham Next Gen, making eight appearances so far this season.
His latest outing also brought a clean sheet in an EFL Trophy match against Reading, providing another positive result as he continues to develop within the club’s pathway.
Bernal has gained experience beyond domestic youth football. Last season, he featured in the UEFA Youth League and produced notable performances against Bayern Munich, Benfica and Ajax.
Chelsea have also seen his progress recognised at international level. He has attended England youth camps and represented the Young Lions at Under-17 and Under-18 level before featuring for the Under-19s during the September and October international window.
The new agreement gives Chelsea further time to oversee his development as he moves towards the next stage of his career. Goalkeepers often need a longer period to progress from academy football into senior competition, and Bernal’s continued involvement across the club’s youth teams offers a route towards that goal.
His immediate focus remains on maintaining his place and building experience, with the contract providing security as he works towards higher levels of football.
Chelsea announced the extension through the club’s official website, describing Bernal as a reliable presence who has shown maturity throughout his progression. The deal keeps him at Cobham until at least the summer of 2029.
