Bayern Munich manager Vincent Kompany is undergoing medical examinations after collapsing while watching the club’s reserve team train on Friday, prompting the Bundesliga leaders to place his coaching staff in charge of first-team duties.

The 40-year-old had been unwell with a viral infection in the days before the incident. He missed a pre-match news conference ahead of Bayern’s Champions League meeting with Arsenal but returned to the touchline for Wednesday’s 2-2 draw.

Bayern Munich confirmed that Kompany required medical attention after collapsing during the reserve team’s training session. The club said he would remain in hospital for further examinations and under medical care, without giving a timeframe for his return.

“Vincent Kompany’s health is our top priority,” sporting director Max Eberl said.

“We at FC Bayern will do everything we can to ensure he makes a speedy recovery. Vinnie is receiving all the necessary medical care and support, and all the time he needs.”

Eberl added that the club had complete confidence in the coaching staff who would take over Kompany’s responsibilities.

The incident came after a difficult week for the Belgian, who had already been forced to miss team activities because of his illness. Assistant coach Aaron Danks had taken his place at the media briefing before the Arsenal match, although Kompany ultimately returned to the dugout for the European fixture.

German football journalist Taufig Khalil told BBC Radio 5 Live that Kompany had been dealing with the virus for about a week. He said the manager had appeared unwell during Bayern’s previous weekend match against Leipzig and that his absence from the news conference had initially been attributed to the infection.

Khalil also reported that emergency services had attended Bayern’s training ground. The club has not publicly detailed the circumstances beyond confirming that Kompany collapsed while observing the reserve side.

Reports from Germany said Kompany was in a stable condition, but Bayern’s statement did not provide a specific medical diagnosis or further details about his recovery.

The former Manchester City and Belgium defender joined Bayern in 2024 after managing Burnley. He has since led the German club through two Bundesliga title-winning campaigns, and his absence comes with another league fixture approaching.

Bayern are scheduled to face Freiburg on Sunday. The club said Kompany’s coaching team would manage training and match operations until further notice, with his health taking priority over any immediate return to work.
