Arsenal are concerned that Bukayo Saka could be out for at least six weeks after the winger suffered a quadriceps injury during Wednesday’s 2-2 Champions League draw away to Bayern Munich.

The 25-year-old was forced off early in the match at the Allianz Arena, leaving Mikel Arteta’s side waiting for further medical assessments to establish the full extent of the problem.

Saka was due to undergo another MRI scan on Friday, with fluid around the affected muscle making it difficult for club medical staff to assess the injury conclusively. The initial estimate is that he will miss a minimum of six weeks, although the absence could be longer.

Arteta declined to confirm a recovery timetable, saying Arsenal needed more information before determining how serious the injury was.

“We need a few more scans and opinions from the specialists,” the manager said.

“When a player has to walk off the pitch, he is struggling to walk without any pain, and is restricted to movement; it is not a good sign. Let’s be a little bit patient so we can give a definitive assessment.”

He added that the amount of fluid around the muscle had complicated the initial examination and that the additional scan would help clarify the situation.

Saka will miss Saturday’s Premier League match against Everton. A prolonged absence would also threaten his availability for a demanding run of fixtures for Arsenal and England, including the forthcoming Nations League matches against Croatia and Spain.

The injury is another setback for a player who has experienced several fitness problems over the past two seasons. An Achilles issue affected his workload last campaign, while a hip problem forced him to withdraw before a match against Leeds United. He has also previously dealt with a hamstring injury that required surgery and kept him out for 101 days during the 2024-25 season.

Arsenal will now have to consider how to cover Saka’s position while waiting for a clearer prognosis. The winger remains a major attacking option for Arteta, and the length of his absence could have a significant impact on the team’s plans through the coming weeks.

For now, the club’s priority is to establish the precise extent of the quadriceps injury rather than set a return date. The six-week estimate remains an early assessment, and the additional medical checks are expected to provide a firmer indication of how long Saka will be unavailable.
