Ødegaard sees positives after Arsenal draw with Bayern Munich

Martin Ødegaard believes Arsenal can take confidence from their 2-2 Champions League draw away to Bayern Munich, insisting the Gunners produced a strong performance against one of Europe’s toughest opponents.

Arsenal took the lead through Eberechi Eze before Bayern responded with goals from Alphonso Davies and Harry Kane. Declan Rice rescued a point with an 82nd-minute equaliser, extending Arsenal’s unbeaten run in the Champions League league phase.

Ødegaard felt the result was fair, but was left wondering whether Arsenal could have claimed an even bigger reward after the way they began the match.

“Yeah, probably a fair result to be honest, but I feel like we could have won the game as well,” the Arsenal captain said.

“I think we did a lot of good things, started the game really strongly and I thought we played a good game. It was a really tough team to play against, lots of man-to-man, duels all over the pitch and so much quality. I thought we did really well and it's just a shame we couldn't get the win, but it was a strong performance.”

The Norwegian played a key role in the opening goal, spotting Eze’s run and delivering a precise pass from inside his own half. Eze, who had come on after Bukayo Saka was forced off with a quad injury, finished confidently to give Arsenal the lead.

“Yeah, it was a good pass for sure,” Ødegaard said. “I just saw he made the run and there was space in behind and I was able to find him – so happily he was onside as well.”

Arsenal were unable to hold their advantage as Bayern found a response through Davies before Kane converted a penalty in the second half. But Mikel Arteta’s side continued to push forward and were rewarded when Rice finished a late move to level the match.

Ødegaard was pleased with the team’s reaction after going behind, highlighting their ability to recover against opponents who put them under sustained pressure.

“We started the game strong, scored the first goal, but then went under, so I thought we did really well to fight to get into the game again and at least get the draw. So, lots of positives and a few things to work on, but it was a good performance.”

There is little time for Arsenal to dwell on the result, with Everton due at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday. Ødegaard welcomed the quick return to domestic action and said the squad would focus on recovery before another demanding fixture.

“Yeah, that's the life! That's what we want. Just looking forward to the next now and recover and get ready for it. It's going to be another big test, and it will be good to get back to the Emirates so looking forward to that.”
