Borussia Dortmund consider retracing interest in Marcel Regula

Borussia Dortmund could return to the transfer market for Marcel Regula in January as they look to address a shortage of natural options on the right side of their defence.

According to reports in Germany, the 19-year-old from Polish club Zagłębie Lubin remains on Dortmund’s list of potential targets after a proposed summer move failed to materialise.

Borussia Dortmund’s immediate concern is squad balance. Julian Ryerson is the established option on the right, but the club have limited alternatives who naturally fit the role. The coaching staff are therefore considering whether Regula could be developed into a more versatile wide player, capable of combining attacking runs with the responsibilities of a wing-back.

Regula currently operates primarily as an attacking midfielder, often playing centrally behind the striker. He has also been used on the wing, however, and his versatility is one of the qualities that has attracted Dortmund’s attention.

The Polish youngster was close to leaving Zagłębie Lubin during the summer, but the move fell through. Reports suggest Dortmund needed to make room in their squad and manage their budget before committing to another signing.

That issue has not necessarily ended the club’s interest. Regula remains under contract with the Polish side until 2028, meaning any winter approach would require negotiations over a transfer fee.

Dortmund are also reported to be considering departures as they assess how best to reshape the squad. Luca Reggiani has emerged as a possible candidate to leave, although there is no concrete destination currently established for the young defender.

The potential move would represent a change in emphasis for Regula. Rather than being recruited solely for his current role in attacking midfield, he could be asked to develop the defensive discipline and positional awareness needed to operate further back on the flank.

There is no completed agreement between the clubs, and Dortmund have not publicly confirmed a January bid. The situation remains dependent on their squad planning and the financial terms required to secure the player.

With the winter window approaching, Regula’s name is likely to remain part of Dortmund’s recruitment discussion. Whether the club can turn their interest into a deal will depend on creating space in the squad and agreeing terms with Zagłębie Lubin.
