Manchester City approached Borussia Dortmund over Mathis Albert during the summer, with the 17-year-old American winger attracting interest from several leading European clubs.

The teenager is regarded as one of Borussia Dortmund's most promising academy graduates and has begun moving closer to establishing himself in senior football. City's interest underlines the growing competition for young players capable of developing into first-team regulars.

According to Goal, Manchester City made an official approach during the summer transfer window to discuss a permanent move for Albert. No agreement was reached, with Dortmund determined to retain a player they believe has a significant future at the club.

The winger has progressed through Dortmund's academy system and made his senior debut in April. He subsequently featured in the first round of the German Cup this season, starting and completing the 5-0 victory over HEBC Hamburg.

His development has also attracted attention internationally. Albert recently received his first call-up to the United States senior national team and scored during the international period, further raising his profile as he continues his transition towards regular senior football.

Reports in Bild have suggested that several major clubs would be prepared to pay up to €15 million for the teenager. Such figures illustrate the value placed on his potential, although there is no indication that Dortmund are willing to accept an offer at that level.

The club have made clear that Albert remains part of their plans. Coach Niko Kovac has indicated that the youngster should receive more opportunities to feature for the first team as his development continues.

β€œThere are no restrictions,” Kovac said when discussing the teenager's prospects.

β€œHe is a very talented young player who is already showing some really good things in training. He has played a cup match and, sooner or later, probably sooner, he will get significantly more minutes here than he might have done six months ago.”

That backing suggests Dortmund see Albert's future in their senior squad rather than on loan elsewhere. His progress will be managed carefully, but the club's intention is to give him opportunities to develop within their first-team environment.

City's interest is part of a wider pattern in which leading European sides seek to recruit promising youngsters before they become established stars. Dortmund, meanwhile, have developed a reputation for giving talented teenagers a pathway into senior football, making it important for the club to protect its emerging prospects from outside approaches.

Albert's immediate challenge is to build on his early appearances and demonstrate that he can contribute consistently at senior level. His international breakthrough has added another encouraging milestone, but regular football at Dortmund will be central to his next stage of development.

With several clubs reportedly monitoring his situation, his progress is likely to remain a talking point. For now, Dortmund have shown little inclination to part with a youngster they believe can become an important player in the years ahead.
