Speaking to L'Équipe, the Gabon striker explained that Marseille decided he should leave before the end of his contract, and that although he would have liked to stay, he chose to respect the club's wishes rather than create friction during a difficult period. H
e said he retains deep affection for Marseille and never wanted to become a problem for a club going through turbulent times.
Reflecting on last season, Aubameyang was critical of the environment around the squad, describing the campaign as genuine "chaos" marked by constant change and a lack of stability that affected performances. The biggest failure, in his view, was missing out on Champions League qualification, the target Marseille had set at the start of the season.
"At Marseille you have to create a bubble and not let yourself be influenced by anything from outside," he said. "We didn't do that, and it cost us dearly."
He said responsibility for the disappointing results was shared across players, coaching staff and the board, and that the group failed to insulate itself from external pressure in a city as demanding and passionate about football as Marseille — a failure he believes affected the squad's confidence at key moments.
On a personal level, Aubameyang said he had no regrets over his two spells at the club, pointing to his numbers last season — 14 goals and 10 assists in 41 appearances — as evidence of a meaningful contribution. He nevertheless admitted disappointment at how his time in France ended, saying he retains great respect for the club regardless.
The 37-year-old has now begun a new chapter at Deportivo La Coruna, the historic Spanish club newly returned to the top flight. Aubameyang said he was drawn both by the club's history and the challenge of helping it recover the prominence it once held.
"The club wants me to play a leading role because of my experience," he said. "I hope it works."
Excited to be back in La Liga, he insisted his passion for the game remains undimmed and that he still has an appetite for goals, assists and success, aiming to bring his experience to bear on Deportivo's growth as a project.
