The Daily Mail reported Aston Villa's interest in the 18-year-old on May 1, after he was deemed surplus to requirements by the Champions League holders. Villa moved swiftly to finalise terms once it became clear that AC Milan's Rafael Leao was closing in on a move to Galatasaray instead.
A club delegation had travelled to Milan to negotiate a loan deal for Leao before switching focus to Mbaye as the Portugal international's move to Turkey gathered pace.
Liverpool held exploratory talks over Mbaye earlier in the window but chose not to proceed, while Bayer Leverkusen had also previously tabled a bid. Villa are understood to have tracked the Senegal international for some time, and the deal is regarded as a coup given the level of competing interest.
Mbaye prefers to operate on the right of attack but is comfortable on the left too, giving Unai Emery a versatile option across the front line. Born in Trappes, France, he opted to represent Senegal at international level and scored against the country of his birth at this year's World Cup.
He made 24 Ligue 1 appearances for PSG last season, scoring three goals and adding two assists, though game time was limited by fierce competition for places at the Parc des Princes. He joined PSG's academy at the age of 10 and, in October 2024, became the youngest player to start a competitive match for the club, aged 16 years and six months, before going on to make his Champions League debut the following season.
The move is the latest piece of business in a summer of significant change at Villa Park, which has already seen Nicolas Jackson arrive from Chelsea and Leon Goretzka join on a free transfer from Bayern Munich, while Ollie Watkins, Youri Tielemans, Ezri Konsa and Lucas Digne have all departed the club.
Mbaye, who is expected to become Villa's ninth signing of the summer, would also add further firepower to a rebuilt attack alongside fellow new arrival Alejandro Garnacho, who joined on loan from Chelsea earlier in the window.
