Thompson joined Arsenal from West Ham United in 2024 in a deal worth ยฃ1.1m and has since established himself as one of the most highly rated young wingers in English football. Last season he played predominantly for the Gunners' under-18s while also featuring for the under-19s in the UEFA Youth League and making his under-21 debut in Premier League 2.
Arsenal are keen to tie Thompson down to an extended contract but no deal has been struck, and Spurs have moved to exploit the uncertainty. Tottenham are confident a deal can be completed, with journalist Gary Ward reporting Thompson is bound for N17 after deciding to leave the Gunners.
Manchester City, who had previously attempted to sign Thompson two years ago, also registered their interest but without success.
Thompson is a versatile attacker most comfortable on the right wing, though he has played at centre-forward and in attacking midfield. He has represented England at under-17 level.
The crowded attacking pathway at Arsenal has complicated the situation. Max Dowman is firmly in Mikel Arteta's first-team plans, while the future of Ethan Nwaneri remains unresolved. The recent departure of academy manager Per Mertesacker has also created uncertainty at the top of the club's youth structure, with a replacement not yet appointed.
Should Thompson cross the divide, it would echo the loss of Omari Hutchinson, who left Arsenal for Chelsea and later commanded a significant fee โ a cautionary precedent the club will be eager to avoid repeating.
