Alan Hutton exclusive: Spurs players must shut up and show fight on the pitch

Former Scotland international Alan Hutton says Tottenham Hotspur players need to stop engaging with angry fans on social media and let their performances do the talking β€” as Spurs battle to avoid the unthinkable.

Speaking to Football Presse on behalf of Betway, Hutton drew on his own experience of a club in freefall to frame the tension gripping White Hart Lane.

"I've seen it when Villa were having a really difficult time the year we went down," he said. "It was really hard for the fans."

Spurs currently sit just inside the relegation zone with seven games to play, having failed to win a single league game in 2026. The club went through three managers β€” Thomas Frank, Igor Tudor and now Roberto De Zerbi β€” in the space of months. Fans booed the team off after each of a string of home defeats, and several players received abuse on social media following particularly poor performances.

Hutton understands the frustration from both sides.

"The expectations of a big club can cause these tensions. They've seen their team for their whole lives, and they want to see them at the top end of the table, but everything's going wrong on the pitch."

"At that moment in time, when you're sliding down the table, and they're paying their money to watch, then they're going to let you know how they're feeling. I totally understand that."

But for the players, he believes the response has to come in only one place.

"As a player, you need to take it on the chin, and the way to turn that round is showing them on the pitch and playing to a high standard.

"As difficult as it would be, you have to show something. You have to show fight and determination to get the team out of it. If you don't, they'll let you know."

The back-and-forth between players and supporters online has been a recurring feature of Spurs' dire season. Hutton is clear that it helps nobody.

"Everything that's coming out β€” the fighting with the fans, the back and forth, the Instagram messages β€” it all just doesn't help.

"You're better off staying quiet, working hard and showing them that you care, and the way you do that is your performances on the pitch."

Seven games remain. For Spurs, that is seven chances to silence the noise the right way.
