John Achterberg has opened up on his 15-year rollercoaster at Liverpool — and says building top goalkeepers meant more to him than lifting trophies.

The Dutch coach, who joined Liverpool FC in 2009 and stayed through the eras of Rafa Benitez, Brendan Rodgers and Jurgen Klopp, became one of the longest-serving members of staff at Anfield before moving on in 2024.

“Being 15 years at a club like Liverpool is a dream for a lot of people,” Achterberg told Football Presse.

“You have to be good at your job to stay that long. I enjoyed every day.”

Achterberg arrived during turbulent financial times but witnessed the transformation after Fenway Sports Group’s takeover — and the explosion under Jurgen Klopp.

“From the moment Klopp came in, everything improved,” he said.

“The supporters believed again. The atmosphere changed. We started winning trophies.”

Liverpool went on to lift the Champions League, Premier League, FA Cup and more during that golden spell.

But for Achterberg, silverware was only part of the story.

“It’s about developing goalkeepers,” he said.

Under his watch, the likes of Alisson Becker and Caoimhin Kelleher flourished, while a string of young keepers built professional careers after coming through the system.

“I want to create good goalkeepers. I want to help them make a career.”
