The former Chilean striker, who represented Inter Milan between 1996 and 2000 and played a key role in their UEFA Cup triumph of 1998, spoke to La Gazzetta dello Sport in tribute to a side he feels reflects the same collective values that defined his generation at the club.
"My Inter won far less than they deserved. The 1998 UEFA Cup cannot be erased, but this too is a beautiful little trophy to celebrate, since it comes on top of the Scudetto. At this historical moment, Inter manages to dominate everyone without problems and I am sure it will remain so in the future. The cycle has never ended. These two trophies leave in your mouth a feeling of justice. Justice is done. No one deserved last season's ending."
Last season, Inter finished one point behind Serie A champions Napoli on the final day — a memory that sharpened the motivation of every player and staff member through this campaign.
On where this Inter fits among the great sides in the club's history.
"They can still grow and take their rightful place of honour, also because of the particular nature of their coach. Cristian Chivu is a son of Inter and it shows. Winning a double in your first year does not happen to everyone. He knows what is needed at Appiano Gentile to achieve important results and his players have absorbed everything at the speed of light. Simply fantastic."
He identified the central midfield as the unit that sets this side apart from their rivals.
"Truly a balanced squad. The department that stands out most for me is the midfield, one of the best in Europe. Two like Nicolò Barella and Hakan Çalhanoğlu you will not find anywhere. They have everything. And then the attack: Marcus Thuram and Lautaro Martínez together represent everything you ask of a forward line. And there is no trace of selfishness. The recognised leader remains Lautaro, who continues to make Inter's fortune."
Zamorano played alongside Ronaldo, Roberto Baggio and Javier Zanetti during his time in Milan, and his comparison of this side to those illustrious predecessors was not made lightly.
