West Ham relegated: Bowen sorry as club promises immediate return

West Ham United have been relegated from the Premier League after 14 consecutive seasons in the top flight, with captain Jarrod Bowen publicly apologising to supporters following Sunday's final day of the season.

West Ham beat Leeds United 3-0 at the London Stadium โ€” Taty Castellanos, Bowen and Callum Wilson on the scoresheet โ€” but Tottenham Hotspur's 1-0 victory over Everton at the same time rendered the result irrelevant. The Hammers finish 18th with 39 points, two points and one place below Spurs.

Bowen, who scored the club's second goal on a painful afternoon, was candid in his assessment: "It's not been enough today, and we're all absolutely gutted for the fans and everyone involved with the club. We were always relying on someone else, and we could've put ourselves in a better position over the last few weeks."

He did not spare himself or his team-mates from blame.

"We've been in the bottom three for most of the season, so we know we haven't hit the levels we've set over the last few years. We just got away with it last year, and we wanted to start fresh and go again this season. It's just so disappointing. I know everyone associated with the club is gutted, and we just have to say sorry to the fans for what we've given them. There's no shining light and there's no positive."

He set out the only acceptable response: "It's going to hurt for a while, but as players we have to take our medicine, go away and then prepare to get this club straight back up to the Premier League, where it deserves to be. That has to be the vision and that's the message that we all have to get behind."

The club issued a formal statement acknowledging the failure directly.

"The plain truth is that we have not been good enough. We must now face the consequences of that failure with honesty, transparency and a determination to repair, refocus and rebuild. As we have done before, we will fight with everything we have to return to the top division of English football at the first time of asking. The hard work to make that goal a reality begins immediately."

West Ham's relegation ends a 14-year stay in the Premier League, which began when they won promotion from the Championship under Sam Allardyce in 2012. During that period they won the UEFA Conference League in 2023 and reached the FA Cup final in 2023. Their lowest league finish in that run was 18th โ€” the exact position they occupy today.

The club face significant financial consequences. Three senior players have release clauses triggered by relegation, Bowen is a near-certain departure, and the estimated income loss from dropping out of the Premier League exceeds ยฃ100 million over two seasons.

They will be back. The question is how quickly.
