Werder Bremen's search for defensive reinforcements has hit an early obstacle after PSV Eindhoven dismissed their attempt to take Kiliann Sildillia on loan, according to Eindhovens Dagblad.
The Dutch champions, who signed the 24-year-old from SC Freiburg earlier this summer for a fee approaching €6 million, are only prepared to consider a permanent departure for the French defender. Sildillia put pen to paper on a contract running until 2030 upon his arrival in Eindhoven and the club have no intention of allowing him to leave on a temporary basis.
Werder are not alone in their admiration. The report also names 1. FC Köln as a Bundesliga suitor monitoring Sildillia's situation, though neither German side has yet tabled an offer that meets PSV's valuation. The Eredivisie club are under no pressure to sell having only just recruited the right-back to replace several outgoing defenders including Olivier Boscagli and Rick Karsdorp.
Sildillia spent five years in the Bundesliga with Freiburg, making 82 league appearances and earning a reputation as a versatile and athletic full-back capable of slotting into central defence when required. He also featured 16 times in the Europa League during his time in the Black Forest and represented France at the Paris Olympics in 2024, winning silver.
Werder manager Peter Niemeyer has made no secret of his desire to strengthen the backline before the window closes, telling Bild that signing a new defender is the club's "top priority." The Green-Whites have leaked goals in their opening fixtures and recognise that additional cover is essential if they are to improve on last season's mid-table finish.
With the loan route now closed, Werder must look elsewhere to solve their right-sided defensive shortage.
The club have also explored alternatives at Bayer Leverkusen, where Tim Oermann and Jeanuël Belocian have emerged as possible loan targets according to DeichStube.
Both Oermann and Belocian offer positional flexibility across the backline, a quality Niemeyer has made clear he is seeking as he looks to give his side greater tactical adaptability.
