Ivory Coast forward Elye Wahi has been denied entry to Canada for his country's World Cup group game against Germany on Saturday.

The Nice forward, on loan from Eintracht Frankfurt, was reportedly arrested last month over alleged involvement in spot-fixing in Ligue 1.

Wahi, 23, started Sunday's World Cup win over Ecuador before news of the case became public this week.

He has been accused of deliberately picking up a yellow card while playing for Nice against Metz in May, in a match where an unusually high volume of bets were placed on that exact outcome.

Spot-fixing is the practice of deliberately influencing match incidents in order to allow people to profit through betting markets.

The public prosecutor's office in Marseille has confirmed that a 23-year-old footballer playing in Ligue 1 was arrested, without naming Wahi directly.

The Ligue de Football Professionnel said on Wednesday that it had been alerted to an unusually high volume of bets placed on a yellow card involving the player.

The Ivory Coast Football Federation said it had not been told of any judicial or administrative proceedings against Wahi.

"The Ivorian Football Federation has taken note of the various articles and information published this Wednesday, 17 June 2026, concerning Ivorian international Elye Wahi," it said in a statement.

The federation added that it had not been officially notified of any case involving him.

"In this particularly delicate period, the FIF extends all its support to the player and reaffirms its confidence in him," the statement continued. "Elye Wahi remains an important element of the Ivory Coast national team."

The federation confirmed that Wahi would not travel with the squad to Canada, as the administrative authorisations required for his entry could not be obtained in time.

He will instead remain in the United States while Ivory Coast face Germany at BMO Field in Toronto.

Both sides go into the match unbeaten after the opening round of fixtures, with Germany having thrashed Curacao 7-1 and Ivory Coast edging past Ecuador 1-0 through a late Amad Diallo winner.

Wahi's absence leaves Emerse Fae with one fewer attacking option against a Germany side already sitting top of Group E on goal difference.

Ivory Coast then close out their group campaign against Curacao in Philadelphia the following Thursday, with their progress at the tournament now resting on a squad missing a key attacking option.
