Giovanni van Bronckhorst is set for an emotional return to Feyenoord, with the Dutch coach poised to take over as head coach of the Rotterdam club.

According to transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano, the deal is done, with the 51-year-old returning to the Eredivisie side where he built his managerial reputation.

Van Bronckhorst joined Liverpool's coaching staff as an assistant to Arne Slot in the summer of 2025, but left the role alongside Slot earlier this month following the Dutch manager's departure from Anfield.

Sipke Hulshoff, who also served as an assistant under Slot at Liverpool, will join Van Bronckhorst at Feyenoord in the same role, according to Romano.

The appointment fills a vacancy that has existed at De Kuip since June 7, when Robin van Persie was sacked as head coach.

Feyenoord finished as runners-up in the Eredivisie this past season, a result that secured the club a place in next season's Champions League.

Van Bronckhorst is no stranger to the Feyenoord hot seat. He previously served as head coach between 2015 and 2019, a period during which the club won the Eredivisie title, two KNVB Cups and two Johan Cruyff Shields.

That title, secured during the 2016-17 season, ended an 18-year wait for Feyenoord to be crowned Dutch champions.

As a player, Van Bronckhorst is a club legend in Rotterdam, having come through Feyenoord's academy and gone on to make 249 appearances for the club across two separate spells.

His playing career also included stints at Rangers, Arsenal and Barcelona, where he won the Champions League in 2006, before returning to Feyenoord to finish his playing days.

After his first spell as Feyenoord head coach, Van Bronckhorst went on to manage Guangzhou R&F in China, before returning to Europe with Rangers and later Besiktas in Turkey.

His time at Liverpool lasted less than a year, joining as part of Slot's backroom staff before both departed following a difficult period that ended in Slot's dismissal.

For Feyenoord, the appointment represents a return to a familiar and successful formula, with Van Bronckhorst's track record at the club giving the board confidence heading into a Champions League campaign next season.

The Rotterdam club will be hoping Van Bronckhorst can recapture the form that delivered silverware during his first spell, as Feyenoord look to build on a second-place finish and establish themselves as genuine contenders both domestically and in Europe.
