Valencia and Celta Vigo shared a goalless draw at Mestalla, a result that did little to ease pressure on under-fire boss Carlos Corberán.

Sections of the home crowd chanted for Corberán's resignation despite it being only the opening weekend of the season, as a cagey encounter produced few clear chances for either side, with Rayco Ugrinic and Arnaut Danjuma both denied by smart Celta defending on the counter.

Corberán described a tightly balanced contest that could have gone either way.

"It's been very even, and I think we played better in the first half than the second. Either team could have gone ahead. It's true there was a spell, ours and Celta's, in the first 15 or 20 minutes of the second half, where it cost us to settle back in after the break.

"Celta take advantage of that very well. We know their capacity to create chances and to press you high up. You have to keep your organisation and take advantage of moments when you win the ball back."

Corberán also addressed the enforced half-time change forced by an ankle injury to De Haas, and defended his decision to start Danjuma up front.

"We don't know the extent of the injury yet, but he couldn't continue. As with any player at Valencia, we have to improve the squad without weakening it. We wanted a forward who could give us options to attack space and run with freedom. I've seen commitment from him."

Pressed on whether a late-arriving squad had cost his side, Corberán was candid.

"It's never ideal. I always hope to have the players as soon as possible. We had a lot of departures last year, we've had some incomings, but the ideal is to have the squad complete when you start the league. That hasn't been the case and we have to adapt."

Asked whether the demands from Mestalla were excessive after one game, he added: "I always respect Mestalla. My respect for this ground, this support and my club could not be higher. I accept all the criticism aimed at me when we don't get the win. I'm the first to raise my hand and take responsibility."

Celta Vigo boss Claudio Giráldez left satisfied with a tactical arm-wrestle he described as thoroughly enjoyable.

"We always want more. I think we had moments to win the game, and they did too, but I think the result is fair, with alternating spells of control. It was a very tactical game — as a coach I really enjoyed it. I'm not sure the neutral enjoyed it as much, but it's a pleasure to play against a team that causes you these kinds of problems, that has so much tactical variability and so many resources among the eleven on the pitch, and with the substitutions too."

Giráldez rated it the best league opener of his three seasons in charge, despite the missed chances late on.

"I'm happy with how the team felt, with how we matured and imposed our way of playing as the game went on. We had 20-25 minutes in the second half of really good play to finish them off, we just didn't get the final pass right. Of the three seasons I've been in charge at Celta, this is the best opening league game we've had. It's a shame we couldn't win, but it's also true we could have lost it."

Asked whether academy graduate André Almeida, who came through Celta's ranks before joining Valencia, might yet return to Vigo, Giráldez was coy, "I have no news on that — as far as I know he's a Valencia player. I greeted Almeida like all the players from the opposing team, especially those we've faced for many years."
