The 18-year-old centre-back is currently recovering from injury and told Gianluca Di Marzio that his priority is getting back on the pitch rather than committing to a senior national team.
“I'm in contact with both national teams, I haven't made a decision yet. The most important thing for me now is to recover from the injury and play as much as possible,” Palma said.
The Udinese defender subsequently confirmed that Austria has also entered the picture.
“There have been contacts with Italy, but also with Germany and Austria, but it's not the time to accept one of these, I'm injured. As a child I grew up with my German mother and my Italian father, I wore both shirts,” he said.
Palma was born in Berlin and has already represented two of the countries at youth level. He played for Italy Under-15s before switching to Germany for the Under-16 and Under-17 teams.
His family background has now opened the door to Austria as well, meaning the Udinese defender has three possible senior international routes without having committed himself to any of them. Austrian reports say Palma's father has Italian and Austrian roots, while his mother is German.
His club career has developed quickly. Udinese confirmed in July that Palma had signed a contract extension until June 2031 and described the 18-year-old as one of the leading young players in his position in European football.
He made his first-team debut for the club in May 2025 and has already collected appearances in Serie A and the Coppa Italia. He spent the second half of last season on loan at Sampdoria, making 11 Serie B appearances and scoring once.
Palma was also linked with Borussia Dortmund during the summer. The supplied source reports that the German club were prepared to offer €30 million, but Udinese rejected the proposal and subsequently extended his contract.
The figure should be treated as a reported valuation rather than a confirmed transfer offer.
For now, Palma's attention remains on his recovery. He said earlier this month that he had returned to running and ball work but did not want to rush his comeback, having previously established himself as a starter during pre-season.
His international decision can therefore wait. Italy, Germany and Austria have all made contact, but Palma has made clear that playing regularly for Udinese comes before choosing which national shirt he will eventually wear.
