Óscar Trejo has left Rayo Vallecano after a decade at the club, his exit arriving days after the most dramatic night in the Madrid club's history — a Conference League final in Leipzig that ended in a 1-0 defeat to Crystal Palace.

The 38-year-old Argentine attacking midfielder, known throughout Vallecas as El Chocota, was on the bench for the final and was not called upon as Rayo Vallecano fell to a Jean-Philippe Mateta goal six minutes into the second half. The result was a painful end to a season that produced the club's first and only major European final.

Trejo made 334 appearances for Rayo across ten seasons, living through three promotions, a Copa del Rey semi-final, qualification for the Conference League and the Segunda División title. He played a significant role in building the club into a consistent La Liga presence from a neighbourhood that has always defined it.

Despite his standing among supporters and teammates — both groups reportedly urged the club to keep him in any capacity, whether as a player, coach or in a staff role — no offer materialised. Trejo himself had stated publicly his desire to remain. He confirmed he had never rejected an offer from the club, contradicting the official version of events given by club president Raúl Martín Presa.

Trejo published a farewell statement, declaring:

"After 10 years the moment has come to close a very important stage of my life. Today the pain of having lost a Conference League final is present, because we dreamed of finishing this journey in a different way. But sport, like life, also teaches you to get back up in defeat.

"I leave with a heart full of memories, lessons and people who have marked my path. Throughout all these years I understood that the most important things are not just titles, but the humility to work every day, respect for teammates and the ability to keep fighting even when things don't go as you wish.

"Thank you to the club, my teammates, coaches, staff and all the fans for accompanying me on this unforgettable journey. Here I learned that effort is non-negotiable and that dreams are always worth it, even when they are not achieved in the way we imagined.

"I leave proud to have defended these colours and with the peace of mind of always having given everything.

"Because in the end, winning passes… but values, people and dreams remain forever.

"Eternal thanks to everyone who makes this neighbourhood the greatest in Europe."

El Chocota's farewell deserved a trophy. He goes without one — but ten years of everything else is a career that nobody at Vallecas will forget quickly.
