Totti waits for Roma's call as contract sits unsigned

Francesco Totti is still waiting to formalise his return to AS Roma as club ambassador, with a contract reportedly ready and in-person discussions ongoing โ€” but no final signature yet as the Friedkin family weigh the exact nature and scope of the role.

The former AS Roma captain has remained in constant contact with the club's hierarchy and has built a solid relationship with head coach Gian Piero Gasperini through a series of private dinners, one of which took place at a Rome restaurant in March organised by former defender Vincent Candela.

Gasperini has been openly enthusiastic, saying previously that Totti would be a major asset for the club and that he already had ideas about the role he could play.

Totti has publicly acknowledged talks are underway, telling Sky Sport: "Me and Roma are talking and we are evaluating. Roma is my home even if I am not there."

The picture is more complicated than it appears. According to reports, the Friedkin family's preferred framing is a centenary ambassador role โ€” limited to Roma's 100th anniversary in 2027 โ€” while Totti has expressed a preference for something more operationally significant, closer to a technical director or sporting bridge between the squad and the club.

That gap has slowed the process. No calls have come from Trigoria in recent weeks and Totti, who has been on holiday in the Bahamas, has been left waiting.

The Corriere dello Sport reports that the American ownership may be close to resolving the impasse and could move to make Totti the connector between the dressing room, the coach, and the boardroom โ€” the role Gasperini has consistently advocated for.

Roma, as the newspaper notes, has rarely needed its historic captain more than it does now.
