Tottenham Hotspur have recalled goalkeeper Luca Gunter from Boreham Wood after 12 appearances, ending his latest loan spell with the National League leaders.

The 21-year-old returns to the Tottenham academy after spending the opening months of the season with the Hertfordshire club, where he made 11 appearances in the National League.

Gunter joined Boreham Wood on loan in July and featured during pre-season before making his competitive debut against Tamworth. He went on to contribute as the club established itself at the top end of the National League table.

His departure brings an end to a spell that offered another opportunity to develop through senior football. Gunter had previously spent time on loan at Wealdstone, gaining experience outside Tottenham’s academy system.

The goalkeeper’s position at Boreham Wood had become less secure in recent weeks. Chelsea loanee Ted Curd returned to the club after a previous loan spell and reclaimed the starting role, leaving Gunter unable to secure a place on the bench because of loan regulations.

Despite the change in his playing status, Gunter’s time at Boreham Wood included a number of positive results. The club highlighted his performances in victories over Carlisle United, Scunthorpe United and Harrogate Town, as well as clean sheets away to Forest Green Rovers and Solihull Moors.

Tottenham confirmed that Gunter had been recalled, noting that the England youth international has already been named as a substitute for the senior side in two competitive matches.

His return gives the Premier League club the opportunity to assess his next development step. For a young goalkeeper, regular senior appearances can be an important part of the process, but competition for places and the needs of both clubs can affect how a loan develops.

Gunter’s immediate challenge will be to resume his work at Tottenham and continue pushing for opportunities. His spell at Boreham Wood provided valuable experience in a competitive league, even though he lost his place towards the end of the loan.

Boreham Wood thanked the goalkeeper for his contribution and wished him well as he returns to the Spurs academy. The club will now need to adjust its goalkeeping options as it continues its National League campaign.

For Gunter, the recall marks a change of direction rather than the end of his development outside the academy. His next steps will depend on Tottenham’s plans and the opportunities available to him in the months ahead.
