Szczesny embraces backup role at Barcelona despite admitting age struggles

Wojciech Szczesny has spoken candidly about the physical toll of continuing his career at 36, while making clear he has fully accepted his role as Barcelona's second-choice goalkeeper behind Joan Garcia.

The veteran Poland international arrived at Barcelona in October 2024 to cover for an injury to Marc-Andre ter Stegen, having retired from professional football only months earlier following the end of his spell at Juventus. He returned to action solely because the call came from Barcelona, a club he had long admired.

Speaking to Polish broadcaster TVP Sport, Szczesny reflected on how the passage of time has affected his daily routine as a professional athlete.

"The passage of time in life is, I'd even say, a pleasant experience, but in my professional life, I won't deny that every training session feels a little harder. I mean that it's much harder for me to get up in the morning and I feel my body is more relaxed."

Despite those challenges, the goalkeeper said he continues to find ways to meet the demands of competing at the top level, describing the situation as a daily test he sets himself.

"I see it as a challenge. I try every day to get up, go to training and give everything. And then, after training, you have that feeling that, yes, I can still do this."

Barcelona agreed last summer to extend Szczesny's contract by a further two years, tying him to the club until 2027 on the basis that he would serve as an experienced understudy to Joan Garcia, who has established himself as Hansi Flick's first-choice goalkeeper.

The club's decision to retain Szczesny was driven as much by his presence in the dressing room as by his ability between the posts, with the Pole valued as a senior figure who has accepted a secondary role without complaint. He has previously gone out of his way to praise his understudy's ability, describing Joan Garcia as a goalkeeper who could be considered among the best in the world.

This season, with his close friend and former Juventus team-mate Robert Lewandowski no longer at the club, Szczesny made 12 appearances for Barcelona, almost all due to injury to Joan Garcia, conceding 21 goals. Across his time at the club he has made 52 appearances in total, conceding 57 goals and keeping 14 clean sheets.

The goalkeeper, who has occasionally drawn criticism for his fondness for cigars, was a prominent figure in Barcelona's title celebrations this season. He acknowledged that his time at the club is unlikely to extend much further given his age, but said he remains grateful for the opportunity regardless.

"I know I won't be here for long because I'm older, I'm grateful."

For a player who had already walked away from the game once, Szczesny's willingness to keep going, in a role far removed from the one he occupied for most of his career, says as much about his attitude as it does about Barcelona's trust in him. Whatever time remains, he appears determined to make the most of it.
