Sunderland have rejected an opening bid from Toulouse for winger Romaine Mundle, with the 23-year-old understood to have no intention of signing a new contract at the Stadium of Light despite having two years remaining.

According to Foot Mercato and corroborated by ChronicleLive, the initial Toulouse offer was rebuffed but the Ligue 1 side intend to return with a second proposal. Strasbourg are also tracking the situation and could enter the race directly if Toulouse's pursuit stalls.

Mundle joined Sunderland from Standard Liège in February 2024 and showed enough in his first full season in the Championship — five goals in 22 appearances in 2024-25 — to generate Premier League-level interest. That debut top-flight campaign was more difficult. Injuries restricted him to 14 appearances and he failed to register a goal contribution, leaving the club with an awkward proposition to manage.

His contract runs until the summer of 2028, giving Sunderland the leverage to demand their own valuation. Mediasportif estimates Mundle's market value at approximately €8 million. Whether Toulouse's approach came close to that figure has not been confirmed.

Sunderland qualified for European football this season under manager Régis Le Bris, finishing seventh in the Premier League, which means any suitor willing to offer Ligue 1 football will need to compete against the prospect of European competition on Wearside. Whether that context is enough to retain a player who is not planning on extending his deal is a different matter.

Toulouse, fresh from a second-place finish in Ligue 1 and their first Champions League qualification, could lose Ivorian winger Yan Gboho this summer, which explains the urgency of their pursuit of a wide replacement.

Sunderland are also monitoring Shea Charles of Southampton as a potential midfield addition, with several Premier League clubs interested in the Northern Ireland international.

Mundle's situation will develop across the coming weeks. The window is not yet open and Toulouse have signalled they are not finished.
