Coventry City invested heavily during the summer, bringing in a host of new players as they prepared for their return to the top flight. However, with the squad still adjusting to the demands of the division, the possibility of further recruitment in January is already attracting attention.
Lampard has previously made effective use of the winter window, with Matt Grimes arriving in January 2025 and Frank Onyeka following 12 months later. Both played important roles in Coventry's promotion push, but the manager is not yet ready to identify where further additions might be needed.
He acknowledged that any decision would involve the club's ownership as well as the football department.
βWell, in my opinion, which is obviously an important one, but it's also an opinion of the owner of where he wants to go with things,β Lampard told the Coventry Telegraph.
βBut I think it's something that we'll look at closer to the time because there's a lot that can happen between now and then. We've got a lot of football to play until January.β
The recruitment department will continue preparing for possible business, but Lampard made clear that he is not currently directing his attention towards potential signings.
βIn terms of recruitment, the recruitment team will always be ready for what may be and what the next step is, but I'm certainly not sitting in that room absolutely at this moment looking at what might be because I want to work with the players that we've got,β he explained.
The manager believes the summer arrivals need time on the training ground before their contribution can be properly assessed. Some have settled quickly, while others are still adapting to the step up.
βAnd when you are adapting as a squad, for the reasons that you said with new players and players playing at the level for the first time, you have to give them some leeway, some time and some work on a training ground, you know, all these things,β he added.
Lampard was equally reluctant to make definitive judgements on players who have found the transition difficult.
βI'm certainly not sitting here making big judgements on players because maybe they're finding it hard to step up to the level. Maybe it's the mental side of the game, maybe it's the physical side of the game; everything ramps up a lot in the Premier League.β
He pointed to the success of Grimes and Onyeka as evidence that Coventry will act if a clear opportunity emerges.
βSo I think it's smart to sit tight on that, to keep working away and then if, as we've shown in the last two years, in a moment something becomes clear and you want to try and go and get someone to help the team β and those two players you mentioned absolutely really did β then I think we would look at it. But at this point we're not there.β
For now, Lampard's message is that the existing squad deserves the opportunity to establish itself before Coventry decide whether January recruitment is necessary.
