Sir Alex Ferguson has congratulated Paris Saint-Germain president Nasser Al-Khelaïfi on their Champions League final victory over Arsenal — taking a pointed swipe at the Gunners in the process.

PSG captain Marquinhos, meanwhile, described the back-to-back triumph as an achievement the club targeted from the very first day of the season.

L'Équipe reported that Manchester United legend Ferguson sent Al-Khelaïfi a personal message following PSG's 4-3 penalty shootout victory at the Puskás Aréna in Budapest, which settled at 1-1 after 120 minutes.

"Nasser, it's Alex Ferguson here. Congratulations — it was a difficult evening for you, but you played against a boring team who only defended. Enjoy your holidays, you deserve them!"

The message was not made public by PSG but was reported by L'Équipe on Sunday. It reflects a view that circulated widely among analysts and neutral observers following the final — that Arsenal, after scoring through Kai Havertz in the sixth minute, retreated into a defensive shape that frustrated PSG without creating further danger of their own.

Ousmane Dembélé's second-half penalty levelled the tie, which remained level through extra time before Eberechi Eze and Gabriel Magalhães both missed in the shootout.

Marquinhos, speaking to Canal+ immediately after the final whistle, reflected on the difficulty of defending the title compared to winning it for the first time.

"This is a different emotion — we went from zero to two in one year with the back to back. From the first day, we showed we wanted to win it. The coach had said at the start of the season that it was hard to win, even harder to win twice in a row, that we had to get back in the mode. That was the objective of the season.

"We had a complete squad and showed it again today. Even the substitutes did the job — Ramos, Beraldo, even going to take penalties. The atmosphere at the Parc must have been incredible. Thank you Paris — enjoy it with moderation. Don't cause trouble!"

PSG become only the second club to retain the Champions League in the competition's modern era, after Real Madrid's three consecutive titles between 2016 and 2018.
