The Egyptian left Anfield as a free agent this summer after nine trophy-laden years, during which he scored 257 goals in 442 appearances and won the Premier League twice and the Champions League once.
After representing Egypt at the World Cup and weighing up his options, including sustained interest from Besiktas, the 34-year-old opted for a surprise switch to Trabzonspor, where he has scored three goals in his first five games. The Turkish side's European campaign was short-lived, however, suffering a heavy defeat to Ferencváros in Europa League qualifying.
A reunion with Liverpool in Europe is not possible this season, but Salah acknowledged a future meeting could not be ruled out entirely.
"I would feel mixed feelings," he said. "It's mixed feelings because I've been there nine years.
"I love the city, I love the fans, and we always had a special relationship. It would be very tricky."
Salah was given an emotional welcome on his arrival in Turkey, with large crowds greeting him both at the airport and during his unveiling at the stadium, and he revealed how club president Ertuğrul Doğan played a central role in persuading him to move to the Black Sea coast.
"Usually I'm not an emotional guy, but arriving at the airport, I think it somehow fulfilled something in me that I'm missing," he told the club. "I really wanted to see that, but I never expected it, I never expected it to be that way at the stadium or the airport. I don't see many players received by the fans like this before they even touched a ball, so I was very, very happy and very emotional."
The forward explained that the scale of the reception matched what he had been promised before making his decision.
"When I heard the club was interested, automatically, I was very excited," he said. "I think the club president's ambition and what he is trying to build with the club, that's what convinced me. I came from a place in Liverpool where the people love me, they always show me love and respect.
"What the president said about the love I would see here, it was in my head, and I would love to see that, which is what happened when I arrived at the airport. It was incredible, and also at the stadium was incredible.
"But the main thing that convinced me was that he really wanted to win something with the team. That convinced me somehow that this was the right thing to do. From a young age, I knew that without motivation I would not succeed, so I always try to find motivation to keep going. That's why I'm here now. I won many things in my career and I want a new challenge, so that's why I'm here. I'm really hoping we can win something special, especially in Europe, and hopefully the league as well."
