Mohamed Salah brought his nine-year Liverpool career to an end on Sunday after a 1-1 draw against Brentford at Anfield on the final day of the Premier League season.

It was a day that reduced the Egyptian striker to tears in front of a capacity crowd that gave him a standing ovation from the moment his substitution was confirmed.

Salah departed Anfield with 257 goals and 123 assists in 442 competitive appearances, making him the club's all-time top scorer and, following Sunday's assist for Curtis Jones, also their all-time leading Premier League assist provider. He broke the record held by Steven Gerrard.

Speaking to Sky Sports after the final whistle, Salah struggled to contain his emotions.

"I think I cried more than in my whole life. I'm not really an emotional guy. We lived our youth here, sharing everything from the beginning to the end."

He rejected any sense of unfulfilled ambition: "I look back and wonder if I would have wanted more than I achieved. Not really. Collectively and individually, we won everything. We see the love from the fans and this is the most important thing for me."

During his nine seasons at Anfield, Salah won the Champions League in 2019, two Premier League titles, the FA Cup, two EFL Cups and the UEFA Super Cup. He also won four Premier League Golden Boots and was twice named in the PFA Team of the Year. His goals-per-game ratio of 0.58 is the highest ever recorded by a Liverpool player across a full career.

He was clear about one thing when asked about a return.

"No, I won't come back. I'll go very far from here. I love everything here, really. I hope the team stays at this level, fighting for everything."

His next destination remains unannounced. AC Milan, AS Roma, Fenerbahçe and clubs from the Saudi Pro League have all been linked. He will not be short of offers, and whatever he chooses will be on his own terms.
