Romero suffered a serious knee injury against Sunderland in April and has been sidelined since. Reports that he had flown to Argentina ahead of Sunday's relegation decider against Everton generated a significant backlash from supporters and former players, including Glenn Hoddle, who said Romero should not be allowed to return to the club.
The Tottenham captain was understood to be back in London by Saturday morning and attended Sunday's match against Everton.
Agent Ciro Palermo spoke to Football London to set out the facts behind the trip.
"Any suggestion that the trip was made for the purpose of attending football matches is entirely inaccurate. More than that, it is a completely fabricated narrative being circulated by people who are unaware of the facts and have no knowledge of the rehabilitation plan that has been in place for weeks."
He also told Football.London: "Cristian's focus is, and has always been, on recovering as strongly as possible, preparing for the World Cup, and supporting Tottenham Hotspur in every way he can. His commitment to the club, his team-mates and the supporters has been evident throughout his time at Tottenham and remains unchanged."
The detail behind Palermo's account is significant. Romero initially turned down the option of returning immediately to Argentina for rehabilitation, choosing instead to remain in London to stay close to his team-mates during the survival battle. Members of the Argentina national team medical staff travelled to London to work alongside Spurs' medical department during the first phase of his recovery. The second phase — completing his rehabilitation in Córdoba before moving to the Argentine Football Association's training centre — had been agreed weeks in advance as part of the programme.
Manager Roberto De Zerbi corroborated that account at his pre-match press conference on Saturday.
"He spoke with the medical staff. Together, they decided to go to Argentina to complete rehab with Argentine medical staff. We spoke last week. With me, he has shown he wants to stay with us."
Belgrano's cup final against River Plate took place in Córdoba on Sunday at the same time as the Tottenham versus Everton match. Romero did not attend it.
Tottenham survived with a 1-0 win over Everton. Romero watched from the stands.
