The Morocco international leaves the Italian capital having made just three appearances since arriving in February 2025, when Roma paid Twente more than €8 million to sign him. Salah-Eddine spent last season back in the Netherlands on loan at PSV Eindhoven, where he won the Eredivisie title, before returning to Trigoria this summer only to find himself surplus to Gian Piero Gasperini's plans.
"AS Roma announce they have reached an agreement with Panathinaikos for the transfer of Anass Salah-Eddine," the club said in a statement. "The deal is concluded as a loan with an option to buy. The Dutch full-back, who arrived in the winter transfer window of 2025, made three appearances for Roma. Good luck!"
Panathinaikos confirmed the season-long loan in their own statement, welcoming the 24-year-old to Athens and setting out his career to date. Born in Amsterdam, Salah-Eddine came through the academies of AZ Alkmaar and Ajax before making his senior debut for the Amsterdam club. A loan spell at Twente impressed enough for the Dutch side to sign him permanently midway through the 2023-24 campaign, and his form there prompted Roma's move for him in February 2025.
Salah-Eddine represented the Netherlands at youth level before switching his international allegiance to Morocco, making his debut against Mozambique in November last year. He went on to feature at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations and started for Morocco in their World Cup quarter-final defeat to France this year, having also played against Brazil and Haiti during the tournament.
"Anas Salah-Eddine was born on 18 January 2002 in Amsterdam, the Netherlands," Panathinaikos said in their statement. "He took his first steps in football at the AZ Alkmaar academy before moving to Ajax's youth setup three years later. We welcome Anas to the Panathinaikos family."
The move brings an end to a brief and largely unproductive spell in Serie A for Salah-Eddine, who will now look to establish himself in the Greek Super League as he continues his career away from the Netherlands.
Roma had previously seen a proposed deal for Olympiacos collapse after Salah-Eddine turned down a reported €7 million offer from the Greek club, with his compatriot and Morocco teammate Azzedine Ounahi said to have played a part in persuading him to instead join Panathinaikos.
His exit also reopens the possibility of Roma revisiting a move for Fenerbahçe defender Jayden Oosterwolde in the January window, after a proposed deal for the Dutchman collapsed last month despite the player completing a medical with the club.
