Sporting director Tony D'Amico has made an attacking winger one of the club's priorities for the closing weeks of the window, with head coach Gian Piero Gasperini growing increasingly impatient at the delay in landing a specialist for the position, a search that has already dragged on since last summer.
The pursuit of RB Leipzig's Antonio Nusa has proven complicated, with the Norwegian's price, reportedly in the region of €60m, a significant obstacle for a Roma side working under a tight wage cap of around €4m net for most incoming signings.
According to Corriere dello Sport, Roma have turned their attention to alternatives, with Chelsea forward Gittens among the names now being considered.
The 22-year-old joined Chelsea from Borussia Dortmund last summer in a deal reported to be worth around €56m, but has struggled for regular minutes at Stamford Bridge, hampered by muscular injuries including a persistent hamstring problem, managing just two assists in 16 league appearances last season, five of them starts.
He is under contract with the London club until the summer of 2032. With Chelsea's squad still bloated by more than 20 surplus players and further arrivals such as Morgan Rogers and Kerim Alajbegović potentially adding to the competition in wide areas, reports in England suggest the club could be open to letting Gittens leave on loan rather than insisting on a permanent sale.
Lyon's Malick Fofana has also emerged on Roma's radar as a further option, with the Belgian winger, who is recovering from an ankle injury that limited him last season, valued at between €40m and €45m and under contract with the French club until 2028.
RB Leipzig have also been tracking Fofana as a possible replacement for Yan Diomandé, adding a further complication to Roma's pursuit.
AS Roma finished third in Serie A last season and will play Champions League football this term, giving the club added incentive to strengthen the squad before the campaign gets under way, with Gasperini pushing hard for reinforcements out wide to complete his attacking options.
