Greenwood, 24, joined Marseille from Manchester United in the summer of 2024 for around Β£26 million. He has been outstanding in Ligue 1, scoring 37 goals and providing 12 assists in 66 league appearances across two seasons.
Marseille finished fifth this season, missing out on Champions League qualification, and the club's uncertain financial situation has opened the door to a potential sale.
A breakdown in relations between Greenwood and the club has developed behind the scenes and he is now expected to leave. Marseille would demand around β¬80 million β a new club record β given his contract runs until 2029 and a return to England is not a realistic option.
A complicating factor for any buyer is United's sell-on clause. The Red Devils retained a 50 per cent stake in any future profit from Greenwood's sale, meaning that a significant portion of any transfer fee above the original β¬30 million paid by Marseille would flow back to Old Trafford.
AS Roma's pursuit is conditional on their own Champions League qualification. They headed into Sunday's final Serie A fixture in fourth place, level on points with AC Milan, with a game against Hellas Verona to play. Only by securing European football for next season would they unlock the revenue required to fund a move of this scale.
Juventus have also been persistently linked with Greenwood throughout this season, with La Gazzetta dello Sport reporting in April that the Turin club were formulating a concrete plan to sign him. Atletico Madrid and Tottenham Hotspur have also been credited with interest in recent months.
Whoever bids will be competing for one of the most productive forwards in Europe not playing in a top-four league. The queue is already long.
