Roma block Chelsea approach for World Cup-injured Wesley as Blues switch to Palestra

Roma have flatly rejected an approach from Chelsea for Brazilian defender Wesley, with the club and coach Gian Piero Gasperini firmly closing the door on any sale before the Blues pivoted to Atalanta's Marco Palestra.

Fabrizio Romano reported that Chelsea made contact with AS Roma to explore the possibility of signing Wesley, whom new manager Xabi Alonso had identified as a target for the right side of his defence. The response from Trigoria was immediate and unequivocal: the 21-year-old is not for sale and the club declined to enter any discussion about terms or valuations.

Wesley was unable to represent Brazil at the 2026 World Cup after sustaining an injury in a pre-tournament friendly, removing him from the global spotlight at a moment that could have significantly raised his profile and his price.

Roma regard the Brazilian as both a technical asset and a player tailor-made for Gasperini's high-intensity system, giving the club every incentive to resist external pressure regardless of the fee on offer.

Wesley joined Roma from Flamengo in a deal worth around €25m last summer and made 34 appearances in Serie A during his debut season, contributing 4 goals and 7 assists and earning recognition as one of the most promising young defenders in European football.

Chelsea's enquiry came before the club completed the more advanced move for Atalanta's Palestra in a deal worth in excess of £43m — the first potential signing of the Xabi Alonso era.

Roma are understood to be seeking to make profit in the market this summer but have drawn a clear distinction between players available and those who are not — and Wesley sits firmly in the latter category.
