D'Amico's appointment ends speculation over the role following the dismissal of Frédéric Massara, who departed after a sustained breakdown in his working relationship with coach Gian Piero Gasperini.
The two men have an established bond from their time together at Atalanta, where D'Amico was instrumental in building the squad that Gasperini used to win Serie A and the Europa League.
His arrival signals that the Friedkin family intend to rebuild Roma's football operation around what the coach requires rather than through an independent transfer strategy.
The head coach has been direct about his priorities. He wants at least two quality attacking midfielders — trequartisti — as his primary summer request, with Greenwood the name at the top of the list.
Greenwood, 24, joined Marseille from Manchester United in the summer of 2024 after his contract was terminated in the wake of legal proceedings that made a Premier League return effectively impossible.
He has since reinvented himself in France, scoring 26 goals and contributing 11 assists across 45 appearances in his first season — numbers that attracted attention from clubs across Europe and brought his combined Marseille record to 48 goals and 17 assists in 81 games.
AS Roma's initial offer to Marseille is understood to be in the region of €40m plus bonuses. The French club, who are under significant financial pressure, are holding out for closer to €50m. Leggo reports that D'Amico's first formal task will be to present that bid and open negotiations in earnest.
Greenwood has indicated his interest in the move. Champions League football at Roma — the club qualified for the competition next season — is an attractive proposition, and the Italian capital is one of few major European markets where his off-field history is unlikely to generate the same level of media hostility he would face in England.
Beyond Greenwood, Crysencio Summerville of West Ham United has been followed closely. West Ham's relegation from the Premier League this season may free the Dutch winger at a more accessible price. Antonio Nusa of RB Leipzig and Borussia Dortmund's Julian Brandt — who could arrive on a free transfer and already has an established partnership with January signing Donyell Malen from their time at Dortmund, where the pair combined for 73 goals and 62 assists — are also being considered.
A move for Malen's former teammate Kerim Alajbegovic is more divisive internally, though the player himself has reportedly signalled his preference for Roma.
The club will not pursue additional positions until the attacking midfield requirement is addressed.
